Abstract
834,910. Electrolytic production of cysteine. ASCHAFFENBURGER ZELLSTOFFWERKE A.G. Nov. 1, 1956 [Nov. 29, 1955], No. 33407/56. Class 41. In a process for the electrolytic manufacture of cysteine hydrochloride, a solution of cystine in hydrochloric acid is electrolysed using cathodes which enter into reaction with the cystine temporarily during the electrolysis or cathodes are employed which are provided with a coating which enters into reaction with the cystine temporarily during the electrolysis. The process may be carried out in an electrolytic cell having anode and cathode compartments separated by a diaphragm, and a carbon anode. The cathode may be of tin or of copper, or of carbon, or a carrier metal either previously coated with tin or to which a coating of tin is applied by adding to the reaction solution, at the beginning of the process, a small quantity of a soluble tin salt or of metallic tin. Metals of the alkali and alkaline earth groups are unsuitable for use as carrier metals.
