Abstract

805,762. Electrodeposition of zinc. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Jan. 4, 1956 [Jan. 4, 1955], No. 348/56. Class 41. Zinc is extracted from solutions of zinc salts containing germanium as an impurity and deposited on a cathode using an insoluble anode, e.g. platinum, lead, lead-silver, siliconiron, lead-thallium-calcium alloys, lead peroxide, manganese dioxide, with a solution pH of 3 to 3.5 which is preferably controlled by the addition of a strong inorganic base such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, preferably as a concentrated aqueous solution. As described, a zinc deposit is produced on a steel cathode from an aqueous solution containing 100 g./l. zinc and 0.006 g./l. of germanium dioxide. Detachable deposits may be produced by using cathodes of aluminium or copper which have been oiled or covered with graphite.
