Abstract

799,280. Electrodeposition of lead and indium. VANDERVELL PRODUCTS, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1956 [Dec. 2, 1955], No. 34550/55. Class 41. Co-deposition of lead and indium is effected by electrolysis of an aqueous bath containing compounds of both metals and a controlling agent, selected from the group comprising ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid, the propylenediaminetetra-acetic acids and cyclohexene-1,2- diaminotetra-acetic acid, and employing an insoluble anode, in which hydracine is present in the bath. The controlling agents may be present in the form of sodium, potassium or ammonium salts or mixtures of such salts. Citric or tartaric acid and ammonium chloride may be added to the bath and, where high current densities are employed, gelatine and triethylene-tetramine, diethyltriamine or ethylenediamine may also be added. The lead and indium may be introduced as the hydroxide, sulphate, acetate, chloride or carbamate. The bath is adjusted to have a pH value in the range 5.0 to 7.0. Preferably the insoluble anodes are of graphite and are used together with soluble anodes of either pure indium and pure lead or indium-lead alloy. Alternatively the soluble and insoluble anodes may be connected alternately for very short periods, so as to maintain the correct metal balance in the bath. Specification 737,713 is referred to.
