Abstract

810,818. Electrolytically plating with platinum. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 16, 1956 [Oct. 19, 1955], No. 31465/56. Class 41. A metal object, e.g. a molybdenum wire, is cathodically coated with platinum black from an aqueous solution containing per litre 150 to 300 gms. chloroplatinic acid and 1 to 15 gms. mercuric chloride, the deposit being converted into a metallic layer and the co-deposited mercury being evaporated by subsequently sintering, e.g. at 1000‹ C. The process may be repeated several times, typically to produce an initial layer of thickness 0.5 to 0.7 Á followed by similar or thicker coatings to give a total thickness of deposit of 10 Á.
