Abstract

1,252,882. Coating with metals by vapour deposition; electrolysis. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Jan.10, 1969 [Oct.17, 1967], No.47189/67. Headings C7B and C7F. A steel substrate is coated with a metal e.g. Zn, Al, Ti, Cd, Cr, Ni or stainless steel by vapour deposition, whilst maintaining the substrate at 200‹C. The substrate is first chemically cleaned then subjected to a glow discharge for 1 to 30 seconds. The coating metal may be heated by induction or electron beam. The substrate may be in the form of a strip continuously drawn through several chambers. The coated strip may be given a further coating of Al. The chemical cleaning may be effected electrolytically by making the substrate a cathode using an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate and for hydroxide as the electrolyte. The substrate may be subsequently pickled by making it the anode in a cell containing 10 to 30% aqueous HCl.
