Abstract
1318311 Electrolytically coating tinplate with chromium oxide USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 9 July 1970 [9 July 1969] 33479/70 Heading C7B Differential tinplate having a coating of less than 0À5 pounds per base box (i.e. less than 0À00003 inch thick) on the lightly tinned side is electrolysed as cathode in a Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 solution of 20-30 g/l, having a pH of 3À5-5À5 and temperature 160-200‹F., to provide a differential Cr 2 O 3 coating thereon, supplying 100-170 coulombs/ sq ft. of current to the heavily tinned side to provide thereon 1À0-1À5 mg Cr/sq ft. and no more than 45 coulombs/sq ft. of current to the lightly tinned side to provide thereon 0À4-0À8 mg Cr/sq ft., to maintain good solderability and resistance to sulphide staining and detinning. Differential applied current may be effected by providing a larger anode surface area for the heavy current side, e.g. passing the tinplate strip through separate tanks adjacent pairs of anodes on the heavily tinned side with or without a single anode on the lightly tinned side.
