Abstract
1364761 Glyoxylic acid RHONE-POULENC SA 18 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 38724/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] Glyoxylic acid is prepared by cathodic reduction of oxalic acid in an electrolysis cell having cathode and anode compartments separated by a cation exchange membrane diaphragm, e.g. reinforced with a screen, using a solid metallic cathode with a hydrogen overvoltage greater than the potential for reducing oxalic acid to glyoxylic acid, and a catholyte comprising an aqueous solution of oxalic acid free of inorganic acid at 0 to 70 C. and which moves in a closed path by being passed through the cathode compartment over the cathode surface. At least the surface of the cathode may consist of Cd, Pb, solid amalgam of Pb, or an alloy of Pb with Ag, Sb, Sn or Bi. The anode may consist of Pt, platinized Ti, graphite, Pb or its alloy, e.g. with Ag, Sb or Sn. The anolyte may be an aqueous solution of sulphuric or phosphoric acid. Oxalic acid may be added continuously to the catholyte which is withdrawn continuously to extract the glyoxylic acid. Thus cooling the withdrawn catholyte below 8 C. precipitates oxalic acid. The anolyte may circulate in a manner similar to that of the catholyte so that the pressure either side of the diaphragm is the same. At least one of the compartments may contain a woven fabric or grid spacer.
