Abstract
1364939 Glyoxylic acid RHONE-POULENC SA 18 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 38727/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] Glyoxylic acid is prepared by cathodic reduction of oxalic acid in a diaphragm electrolysis cell using a catholyte comprising an aqueous solution of oxalic acid and 0À00005 to 1% of one or more tertiary amine or quaternary ammonium compounds, having (a) more than 11 C atoms when the N is not part of an unsaturated heterocyciic ring, or having (b) an unsaturated heterocyclic ring containing N and at least 5 C atoms; e.g. tetrabutyl-ammonium, tributyllauryl - ammonium, trimethyl - lauryl / myristyl / palmityl / stearyl / (lin)oleyl / linolenyl / arachidyl / behenyl / erucyl - ammonium, tirethyl-stearyl or hexyl-ammonium salt (halide or bicarbonate) or hydroxide; or pyridine, quinoline or 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dipyridyl. The cathode may consist of Cd, Pb, Hg or amalgam or alloy thereof, e.g. with Ag, Sb or Sn. The anode may consist of Pt, platinized Ti, graphite, Pb or its alloy, e.g. with Ag, Sb or Sn. The diaphragm is preferably a cation exchange membrane reinforced with a screen. The anolyte may be an aqueous solution of sulphuric or phosphoric acid. Woven fabric or grid spacers may be located between the electrodes and the diaphragm to form a compact filter press cell. The catholyte is preferably circulated, with oxalic acid being added continuously and catholyte being withdrawn continuously to extract the glyoxylic acid; the catholyte may also contain sulphuric acid.
