Abstract
1446179 Preparing glyoxylic acid electrolytically RHONE-POULENC SA 30 Nov 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55719/73 Addition to 1364939 Heading C7B [Also in Division C2] Glyoxylic acid is prepared by reduction of oxalic acid in a diaphragm cell in which a catholyte comprises an aqueous solution of oxalic acid and 0.00005 to 1% of an adjurant chosen from: (a) tertiary amines having less than 40 C atoms, (b) ditertiary diamines having between 6 and 40 C atoms. (c) quaternary ammonium salts either of Formula NR 4 <SP>+</SP>. <SP>1</SP>/ y A<SP>y-</SP> or NR 4 <SP>+-</SP>R<SP>-</SP>NR 3 . <SP>2</SP>/ y A<SP>y-</SP>having between 15 and 40 or between 8 and 40 C atoms respectively all containing (aryl) aliphatic radicals (y being 1, 2 or 3, and A being hydroxy or anion of inorganic or organic acid.) Many examples are specified, e.g. tribenzylamine, (dimethylamino) -ethyl ether dimethyl or diethyl-benzyl-dodecyl- (or tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, eicosyl, docosyl) ammonium hydroxides and salts. The cathode may be of Cd, Pb, Hg or amalgam or alloy thereof e.g. with Ag, Sb or Sn; the anode may be of Pt, platinized Ti, graphite, Pb or its alloy e.g. with Ag, Sb or Sn. The diaphragm is preferably a cation exchange membrane reinforced with a screen. The anolyte may be an aqueous solution of sulphuric or phosphoric acid. Woven fabric or grid spacers may be located between the electrodes and diaphragm in a filter press type cell. Catholyte and anolyte may be circulated, oxalic acid being added and catholyte withdrawn continuously. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller Specification 1364761
