483,068. Electrolytic production of magnesium and alkaline earth metals and their alloys. MAGALL AKT.-GES. July 6, 1936, No. 18695. Void. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1935. [Class 41] The metals are obtained by electrolysis of their fused halides which are regenerated by reaction of the nascent halogen with anode material consisting of lumps of a composition containing carbon and the oxide or carbonate of the metal to which, in order to increase the conductivity, there is added powdered graphite or an organic substance such as sugar, molasses, tar or pitch which produces carbon on heating. The anode material may be contained within a perforated nonconducting chamber 2 and subjected to pressure by a metal or graphite block 3 serving as anode connection. Alternatively anode chambers may be disposed at the sides with a central cathode. Alloys of magnesium or alkaline earth metals with other metals such as aluminium may be made by incorporating a compound of the alloying metal in the anode material or by using a fused cathode of this metal.
