Abstract
224,488. Aluminum Co. of America, (Assignees of Frary, F. C.). Nov. 5, 1923, [Convention date]. Aluminum, refining.-In the electrolysis of a fused electrolyte containing the fluoride of an alkali metal, a layer of molten metal 14 floating on the electrolyte 13 and acting as the cathode is connected to the external circuit by an electrode or electrodes 19 the lower end of which is essentially graphite. The electrodes may be made by graphitising amorphous carbon at high temperatures. In refining aluminium, the anode 10 consists of molten aluminium alloy which may contain copper and the electrolyte 13 comprises barium fluoride, 30-38 per cent sodium fluoride 25-30 per cent; aluminium fluoride, 30-38 per cent; alumina, 0.5-5 per cent; calcium and magnesium fluorides (present as unavoidable impurities), about 2 per cent.
