Abstract
1,273,978. Electro-deposition of metal; regeneration of electrolyte. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. Aug. 1, 1969 [July 8, 1968], No.32527/68. Heading C7B. In a process for continuous electrolytic deposition of a metal, the metal is dissolved electrolytically in a dissolving cell 1 using a consumable cathode 2, the electrolyte produced is continuously passed to a cell 4 in which the metal is electro-deposited and the spent electrolyte is recirculated to the dissolving cell. As shown the cells are connected in series with power supply 11 and electrolyte is cycled through the system by means of pump 8. Oxygen formed at the anode 5 in the deposition cell 4 and hydrogen formed at the cathode 21 of the dissolution cell 1 may be fed to a fuel cell to augment the power supply; or a fuel cell electrode may be used as the electrode 21 (as shown), the oxygen formed being supplied to this electrode. The metal deposited may be copper, and the electrolyte may be copper sulphate. The process may be used in the continuous production of wire or strip material.
