Abstract
826,634. Fused electrolyte apparatus. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO. Ltd. March 9, 1956 [March 10, 1955], No. 7135/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. An electrolytic cell for producing aluminium by reduction has a current-conducting element which is in contact over at least part of its surface with molten aluminium and has at least that part largely composed of at least one of the materials of the group consisting of the carbides and borides of titanium and zirconium, and a flux bath containing sodium chloride, e.g. from 10 to 30% by weight of the weight of the bath. The phrase " largely composed of ... titanium and zirconium " means that the part in question is composed of at least 90% by weight of one or more of the materials specified. In specific embodiments, the elements are sintered titanium carbide cathode leads which enter the magnesite base of the cell horizontally or vertically, the cell constructions being the same as some of those described in Specification 802,905. Specifications 784,695, 784,696, 802,471 and 826,635 also are referred to.
