562,777. Production of rare earth metals. GLEAVE, W. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 11, 1943, No. 495. [Class 41] Rare earth metals and alloys or mixtures, thereof, such as mischmetal, are produced by the electrolysis of fused melts of alkali or alkaline earth halides (sodium, calcium and barium chlorides) containing the oxides of the rare earth metals (e.g. cerite oxide), or anhydrous compounds, such as oxalates, which decompose at the temperature of the melt (800-1000‹ C.) to yield the oxides. Salt-impregnated anodes as described in Specification 560,235, [Group XI], are preferably employed.
