Abstract
Aluminium oxide is dissolved in a salt melt. The melt contains aluminium sodium fluoride as the main constituent. Arranged in the melt there are an anode and a cathode. Between the anode and the cathode there flows direct current. As a result, the aluminium oxide is electrolysed. Part of the anode or the cathode comes into contact with the salt melt. At least this part is made of an electron-conducting composition or covered with an electron-conducting composition. The composition contains at least 50% by weight of at least one electron-conductive, ceramic oxide material. The oxide material corresponds to the formula: 1. XYO2 2. X2Y2O7 3. XYO4 4. <IMAGE> 5. AxOy.Ta2O5 6. AxOy.Nb2O5 In the formulae, A, Ai, Bj, XAi, XBj, i, j, k, l, X, Y, x and y have the meanings specified in claim 1. The anode or cathode, respectively, does not react with oxygen and is chemically resistant to the melt.
