Abstract

A solid compound of uranium and fluorine, which is enriched in the isotope U235, is produced by bringing uranium hexafluoride vapour enriched in the isotope U235 into contact with uranium tetrafluoride to form a fluoride or fluorides of intermediate composition. Reaction preferably takes place at 60-200 DEG C. and products of composition U4F17, U2F9 and UF5 may be obtained. Enriched uranium metal is formed by reducing U2F9 with magnesium or calcium; UF5 is reduced by hydrogen chloride at 150 DEG C. or more to UF4 and this compound is reduced by magnesium or calcium to enriched uranium metal.ALSO:Uranium metal enriched in the isotope U235 is produced by reduction of an enriched uranium fluoride having a composition intermediate between UF6 and UF4 (see Group III). U2F9 is reduced with magnesium or calcium; UF5 is first reduced with hydrogen chloride at 150 DEG C. or more to form UF4 and then this compound is reduced with magnesium or calcium.
