Abstract
Uranium halides, particularly the tetra- and hexafluorides, are made by the interaction of a gaseous hydrogen halide and uranium dioxide at elevated temperature, the dioxide being maintained in fluidized suspension in the hydrogen halide. Thus uranium tetrafluoride is made in this way from uranium dioxide and gaseous hydrogen fluoride. The dioxide may be made by reducing U3O8 in fluidized suspension in hydrogen and the resulting fluidized suspension of dioxide may be treated with hydrogen fluoride, or the reduction and fluorination may proceed together. The tetrafluoride may be converted to hexafluoride by treatment with fluorine. The process may be carried out in a continuous manner or batch-wise.
