<PICT:1062184/C1/1> In a process for producing alkali metal (e.g. Na or K) bicarbonates an excess of triethylamine and carbon dioxide introduced into precipitation column 1 at 3 and 4 respectively flow upwards counter-current to alkali metal chloride solution introduced at 2. Alkali metal bicarbonate suspended in triethylamine hydrochloride solution is withdrawn at 6. Unreacted triethylamine from 7 together with fresh triethylamine from 11 is pumped to inlet 3.
