Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of sodium carbonate by carbonation of ammoniacal solution of sodium chloride according to the ammonia-soda process, the monocarbonation of partially monocarbonated ammoniacal solution is carried out in a tower containing packings suitable for the absorption of a gas by a liquid, through which the said solutions trickle downwards, the tower being located in the ammoniasoda process cycle between a cleaning tower and a precipitating tower. Carbonation gas may be exit gases from known carbonation towers or flue gases from boilers. The packed tower may be used in conjunction with known ammoniasoda carbonation towers, sited between the towers undergoing cleaning and the precipitating towers where sodium bicarbonate is formed. Known towers carry cooling tubes in the lower part, are filled with liquid, and have "passettes". A cleaning tower 1 is fed at 4 with ammoniacal brine and at 5 with a gas containing 40% CO2. Liquor from tower 1 is fed at 6 into a packed tower 2, injected at 11 with gases from tower 1 and precipitation tower 3 together with flue gas containing 13% CO2 introduced through 12. Liquor from 7 enters at 8 precipitation tower 3, injected at 9 with a gas containing 60% CO2. The sodium bicarbonate and mother liquor leave tower 3 at 10 and are treated by known methods to give sodium carbonate.
