Abstract

<PICT:0984069/C1/1> NH3 is separated from gas mixtures by absorption in a melt containing an acid salt, i.e. having acid H atoms, followed by heating to desorb NH3. Preferred acid salts are the low-melting alkali metal and ammonium salts of H2SO4 and H3PO4. Substances capable of lowering the melting-point may be added, or a mixture of the above salts used. Desorption rate is increased by adding neutral salts, e.g. alkali metal sulphates and phosphates, and by use of a carrier gas, e.g. N2, H2, air or steam. A portion of the acid or neutral salt, and part or all of the ammonium salts formed, may be in solid form, suspended in the melt. The composition of the melt is maintained by adding water or steam, after desorption. The gas mixture may contain acid gases, viz. HCN, H2S, SO2, CO2, hydrogen halides, and other gases, e.g. H2. Continuous operation is effected in the apparatus shown: Gases are fed through pipe 1 into vessel 2, where melt 3 absorbs NH3 and flows out through pipe 5, while NH3-free gases leave at 4. Carrier gas enters at 6, and the melt is conveyed by gaslift or rotary pump 7 to desorption vessel 9, e.g. at 100 DEG C. higher than vessel 2. NH3 leaves at 10, and the melt flows back via siphon 14, and heat exchanger 12, to below the surface of melt 3.
