Abstract
A process for the manufacture of urea in granular form from ammonia and carbon dioxide in which the residual gas from the synthesis, containing ammonia, carbon dioxide, water and inert gases, is worked up by selective absorption of the ammonia and the ammonia and carbon dioxide are separately returned to the process, is characterised by the feature that after removal of the greater part of the ammonia, the residual ammonia remaining in the gas mixture is partly or completly washed out with aqueous sulphuric acid and is obtained as an aqueous ammonium sulphate solution, which is added to the originally produced aqueous solution of urea, after which the mixture is concentrated and granulated. Preferably the ammonia is selectively absorbed by treatment with ammonium nitrate solution; the amount of ammonia so absorbed is preferably adjusted by altering the absorption conditions in such a way that the treatment with aqueous sulphuric acid produces as much ammonium sulphate as is necessary, when mixed with the urea, to give a concentration of 3-20%. Any excess of ammonia may then be removed by water washing.
