Abstract
In a process for the production of urea by reacting a feed stream including ammonia and carbon dioxide at a temperature between 160 DEG C. and 200 DEG C. and a pressure between 2,000 p.s.i.g. and 4.500 p.s.i.g., the effluent stream containing urea and ammonium carbamate is passed through a first ammonium carbamate thermal decomposition stage, in which a portion of the ammonium carbamate is decomposed at reduced pressure to give an off-gas containing ammonia and carbon dioxide, which is scrubbed with water, aqueous ammonia, aqueous urea or aqueous ammonium carbamate while in heat exchange relation with the residual effluent stream in a second ammonium carbamate thermal decomposition stage, in which the remaining ammonium carbamate is decomposed at reduced pressure to give an off-gas containing ammonia and carbon dioxide, which is then removed from the remaining urea effluent. The solutions of absorbed off-gas may either be used for further scrubbing operations or may be recycled to a stage producing ammonia and carbon dioxide for the urea synthesis stage.
