Abstract

Sulphur dioxide is removed froma gas by (a) contacting the gas with a thin aqs. absorption soln. of sodium, lithium or beryllium sulphite in an absorption column so that sulphur dioxide is absorbed in the gas with conversion of sulphite into bisulphite and formation of used absorption soln. contg. the corresponding metal bisulphite, (b) exposing the used soln. in a desorption zone to temps. high enough to decompose the bisulphute into sulphite, sulphur dioxide and water, (c) removing sulphur dioxide and water from the desorption zone and precipitating the sulphite from the soln. until the formed slurry contains >=25% wt. undissolved solids, (d) passing the slurry from the desorption zone through the tubes of an indirect heat exchanger with supply of heat to the slurry, and (e) recycling the sulphite of the slurry to the absorption zone.
