Abstract

1328920 Sodium sulphite from waste liquors EBARA INFILCO CO Ltd 30 Dec 1971 60855/71 Heading C1A A process for converting sodium sulphide, in smelt obtained from semichemical and sulphite processes, to sodium sulphite comprises quenching in an aqueous saturated solution of the smelt and oxidizing the separated solid particles so formed, by contacting with air. In the process, a steam jet may be used to convert the molten smelt to a particulate mass, prior to quenching in a trough in which the solution of smelt is recirculated. The separated particles contain up to 50% by weight of water, which serves to control the temperature in the converter by evaporation of the water. Inhibition of the formation of sodium thiosulphate is achieved by the addition of 2-20% by weight of sodium hydroxide, to the wet solids just previous to their being fed to the converter, where the oxidation is carried out.
