Abstract

1344391 Producing sulphuric acid SUMITOMO JUKIKAI KOGYO KK 28 April 1971 12010/71 Heading C1A In a process for producing sulphuric acid from an SO 2 -containing feed gas by converting SO 2 to SO 3 which is absorbed in an absorption tower, SO 2 and SO 3 in the effluent gas from said absorbing tower are absorbed on a solid absorbent capable of converting SO 2 to SO 3 and washed therefrom with water or dilute sulphuric acid, the sulphuric acid thus produced being supplied to an earlier stage in the H 2 SO 4 production process. The preferred absorbent is active carbon. In the embodiment illustrated the off-gas from final absorption of SO 3 in H 2 SO 4 in absorption tower 27 is passed via line 28 and humidifier 29 to a vessel 33 packed with absorbent. SO 2 and SO 3 are absorbed and purified gas leaves 33 via valved line 34 and line 36. Water or dilute sulphuric acid is then passed through vessel 33 via lines 50 and the sulphuric acid produced is removed via lines 52 and 54 and recycled either for further washing of absorbent via 54a-54e, lines 47, 29, and 50, or for use in absorbing tower 27. Finally a stream of air heated by the heat of reaction in converter 23 is blown over the absorbent in 33 to restore it to its original state when the process is repeated. At least three vessels 33 may be provided or subjected to the cycle absorption, washing, drying in such a way that at any given time at least one absorbent is being used in each stage.
