Abstract
Uranium pentafluoride enriched in the isotope U235 is produced by reacting enriched uranium hexafluoride with uranium tetrafluoride in substantially equimolecular amounts, the uranium tetrafluoride being in the form of a fluidized bed. Reaction may take place at 200 DEG C., the bed of uranium tetrafluoride being fluidized by the vapour of enriched uranium hexafluoride. The enriched uranium pentafluoride may be disproportionated by heating to 400 DEG C. in vacuo or an inert gas stream to liberate uranium hexafluoride and leave enriched uranium tetrafluoride; in this process also the uranium pentafluoride may be in the form of a fluidized bed. The uranium hexafluoride liberated may pass to a diffusion plant for enrichment and use in treating further uranium tetrafluoride; the enriched uranium tetrafluoride may be reduced to uranium metal. An isotope exchange unit is described comprising a series of linked reaction sections and disproportionation sections, uranium hexafluoride and uranium tetrafluoride flowing countercurrently through the series.
