Abstract
A product for refining steel during casting, e.g. by introducing into the steel in a ladle or an ingot mould, comprises (a) one or more of a fluoborate, fluosilicate, fluotitanate and/or an alkali metal fluoride, (b) boric acid and/or an alkali metal borate, and (c) one or more reducing agents selected from C, Si, Mn and Al. The reducing agent(s) may be incorporated in the steel in statu nascondi by including in the product one or more fluorides of Si or Mn or Al and/or one or more carbides. An example is given of composition: 80% anhydrous borax, 10% NaF, 1% each of Na2CO3 and K2CO3, 5% graphite and 3% lamp black.
