Abstract

Magnesium-base alloys of low density, high ductility and good tensile strength comprise 1-12 per cent lithium, 0.5-12 per cent aluminium, not over 0.1 per cent sodium and the balance magnesium with or without traces of impurities commonly associated with magnesium, lithium and aluminium. Sodium which has a deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of the alloys, is preferably absent, and to ensure a sodium content not exceeding 0.1 per cent the alloys are prepared by melting the magnesium under a flux of one part lithium fluoride and three parts lithium chloride, and then adding the aluminium and lithium, the latter being held under the surface of the molten metal, as by an inverted perforated steel cap, and the temperature of 1300-1400 DEG F being used. The alloys may be cold-rolled after hot rolling and are suitable for wrought fabrication; castings and rivets, whilst some of the alloys are susceptible to heat-treatment hardening.
