Abstract

Cast iron is improved by the addition to a molten bath of(1) a substance selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium. barium, and strontium, and silicides and carbides of these metals, and (2) a fluorine containing compound of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a rare earth metal, substantially simultaneously, or by the addition of a mixture of (1) and (2) and then pouring a casting. Up to 4 per cent of each of(1) and(2), based on the weight of melt, may be added and the melt may have a covering of basic slag. The materials may be added, with stirring, to thessurface of the melt, or to a stream of metal flowing into a ladle, or to a rotating refractory lined tumbler along with the metal. A graphitizing agent or alloying agent may be added with or prior to the addition of these materials. The fluorides of the rare earth metals may be obtained from monazite sand.
