613,822. Converters; foundry ladles. DAUSSAN, H. J. June 21, 1945, No. 15900. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1943. [Classes 72 and 82(i)] The portions of the wall round the outlet of a molten metal container such as a steel converter or foundry ladle on which slag or projected metal tends to accumulate are coated with a lining which is adapted to oppose permanent adhesion of the slag, &c. and which is bodily or fractionally detachable from the wall. In one form, Fig. 1, the lining 6 which may be made of bricks or a paste made of 90-98 per cent by weight of carbonaceous material such as coke and ferric oxide or iron filings, and 10-2 per cent of cement, alkali silicates or ammonium chloride, is removably mounted on the metal wall 5. The lining may also be made of blocks of steel or cast iron cemented or otherwise secured to the wall or of a pulverized or granular substance containing some water, such as water of crystallization, such as, for example: 90-75 per cent of carbonaceous material, iron oxide filings and 10-25 of crystalline sodium metal silicate. In another form, Fig. 3, an arcuate member 7 of sheet steel or reinforced cement is laid in a rabbeted part of the usual lining 8, leaving a gap 9 for expansion, and is held in contact with the wall 5 by wedges 10 which pass through openings in a front flange on the part 7. In another form the lining is made of a number of separate removable metallic blocks or straps held in place by wedges.
