Abstract
A process for the production of high duty cast iron comprises melting an iron charge in a cupola furnace with coke, at least a part of which is a synthetic coke having a porosity of 20-40 per cent and which may contain chalk, dolomite, alkali metal compounds or materials containing clay or boron, at least a part of the synthetic coke having incorporated therein a finely divided metal, metal alloy, or metal carbide. The metal or metal alloy may be manganese, ferro-manganese, ferro silicon, aluminium, ferro aluminium, a metallic deoxidizing agent, magnesium or cerium. Some or all of the charge (metal and synthetic coke) may be given a protective coating, e.g. waterglass, pulverized slag, or clay. The metal or metal alloy may be in a size not greater than 3 m.m. and may be in amount 5-15 per cent of the synthetic coke. When magnesium or cerium are included in the synthetic coke, the graphite in the cast iron may be spheroidal in character. German Specification 912,453 is referred to.
