Abstract
A bath for the hardening of steels, especially tool steels, comprises one or more alkaline or alkaline earth halides which are stable at 1000 DEG C., an amount not exceeding 10 per cent of one or more metal oxides such as magnesium or aluminium oxide or compounds adapted to form such oxides at the working temperatures of the bath, e.g. 730-1400 DEG C. and one or more boron or like compounds adapted to facilitate the solution of the metal oxides and their action at the surface of the steels, such as borax in cyrstalline form, pyrophosphates, fluorine compounds and tungstates. Examples of compounds which are reduced to oxides are magnesium carbonate and pure or natural cerium chloride. The temperatures used for the hardening are between 730 DEG C. and 1400 DEG C. and the steels after being heated in the bath are quenched and then, if desired, annealed. In an example, the bath for tool steel comprises 71 parts of barium chloride, 20 of sodium chloride, 8 of borax and 1 of magnesium oxide.
