Abstract

Iron or steel articles to be coated by dipping in molten aluminium or an alloy containing aluminium as its main constituent, e.g. an alloy containing at least 95 per cent of aluminium, are immersed in a molten flux bath which contains one or more fluorides, for example sodium aluminium fluoride, and one or more alkali chlorides, with or without other salts such as zinc chloride, but which does not contain any compound of calcium. The articles are left in the flux bath until oxides &c. are removed and the articles are properly heated and are then transferred to the aluminium or aluminium alloy bath. The flux bath preferably contains fluoride in an amount corresponding to more than 5 per cent of sodium aluminium fluoride. A flux described contains 10 per cent of sodium aluminium fluoride, 20 per cent of dehydrated zinc chloride, 30 per cent of sodium chloride, and 40 per cent of potassium chloride.
