Abstract

A flux for use in melting, refining, and/or casting magnesium and its alloys comprises barium fluoride together with a combination chosen from the chlorides and fluorides of calcium and strontium. The calcium and/or strontium constituents are such as to approach the eutectic composition. In an example, the flux consists of 25 per cent of barium fluoride, 60 per cent of calcium chloride and 15 per cent of calcium fluoride. The flux may be employed in conjunction with sulphur.
