Abstract

Magnesium or magnesium alloy suture material prepared, according to the parent Specification, in the form of very fine wires or ropes formed from such wires, is formed with a uniform protective surface layer in order to retard resorption in the body. The layer may be formed by treatment with aqueous caustic potash or soda, for example by boiling with 4 per cent or stronger caustic potash or soda solution, or by one of the following methods: (a) treatment with steam, e.g. for fifteen minutes at ten atmospheres; (b) dipping into or brushing with aqueous or alcoholic-phenol solution; (c) dipping into an aqueous solution of a fluoride such as hydrogen fluoride, potassium bifluoride, ammonium polyfluorides, or a saturated solution of sodium fluoride; (d) dipping into an aqueous bath, containing 10 per cent of sodium bichromate and 10 per cent of tin sulphate, or 2 per cent of aluminium sulphate and 0,5 per cent of chromium sulphate, at 70-80 DEG C., or containing other heavy metal salts; (e) suspending for about half an hour in a closed space over concentrated aqueous ammonia. Wires having a diameter of 0,04-0,1 millimetres are referred to.ALSO:Magnesium or magnesium alloy suture material prepared, according to the parent Specification, in the form of very fine wires or ropes formed from such wires, is formed with a uniform protective surface layer in order to retard resorption in the body.
