Abstract

A phosphate coating is formed on zinc or zinc alloy surfaces by treatment with a solution containing zinc ions, phosphate ions, nitrate ions, and the ions of nickel, cobalt, or both nickel and cobalt, the phosphate and zinc ions being preferably the major constituents. The coating forms a good base for paint, varnish, lacquer, &c. The solutions may contain moderate amounts of other cations such as sodium, calcium, and other highly basic metals, and anions such as sulphate, borate, or chloride. Solutions are described containing: (a) zinc oxide, nickel carbonate, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, and water; (b) zinc oxide, phosphoric acid, sodium nitrate, cobalt sulphate and water; and (c) zinc oxide, phosphoric acid, nickel nitrate, isopropyl naphthalene sulphonic acid, methanol, and water. Solutions (a) and (b) are preferably used at a temperature of about 160 DEG F. and solution (c) may be applied cold, e.g. by brushing, spraying, or flowing. U.S.A. Specification 1,221,046 is referred to.
