543,770. Cleaning metal and ether surfaces. PYRENE CO., Ltd., CLIFFORD, W. J., and ADAMS, H. H. July 23, 1940, No. 12069. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group III] A greasy, oily, or similarly dirty surface on a metal, glass or other material is cleaned by spraying the surface with an aqueous solution of a weak acid or salt, the solution having a pH value of 2.5-4, a concentration less than 2.5 per cent. and a temperature above 120‹F., the spraying being stopped when the surface is clean. Examples of acids and salts used are phosphoric, chromic or boric acid, phosphates, e.g..manganese or zinc dehydrogen phosphate, nitrates, e.g. manganese nitrate, and sulphates, pyrophosphates and trichlcracetates especially the sodium salts. When a neutral salt is used, the acid corresponding to the acid radicle of the salt must be added to give the desired pH value. Wetting agents in a proportion up to 1 per cent. may be added to the solutions. The surface may be sprayed with hot water both before and after the acid solution. Metal surfaces are cleaned prior to coating them with corrosion-resistant coatings such as those containing hexavelent chromium or phosphates or both
