Abstract

A fused salt bath for the heat treatment of steels and alloy steels consists of more than 50 per cent. by weight of an alkali metal halide or a mixture of alkali metal halides, a smaller proportion of an alkali metal cyanide, and from 0.25 per cent. to 5.0 per cent. of silicon. It is preferred to include in the alkali metal halides an alkali metal fluoride, e.g. less than 10 per cent. by weight of the bath of sodium fluoride. Up to 15 per cent. by weight of the bath of alkali metal cyanide may be used. The bath may be operated at 800-950 DEG C. and may be provided with a protective layer of graphite.
