Abstract
Sulphur trioxide is stabilized in the form by adding at least one compound selected from the group comprising tin tetrachloride, titanium tetrachloride, antimony pentachloride, and the alkali metal silicofluorides, e.g. sodium silicofluoride. The liquid sulphur trioxide should be free from water and should be heated with say 0.25-2 per cent by weight of the stabilizing compound for a sufficient time, e.g. 5 hours, to stabilize the sulphur trioxide against polymerization to the b and \yB forms when stored below 30 DEG C.
