Abstract

A minor proportion of thionyl chloride preferably 2-15 per cent. by weight is added to liquid alpha sulphur trioxide to stabilise it and/or lower its freezing point. The trioxide is preferably anhydrous, and a dehydrating agent, e.g. phosphorous pentoxide may be added to ensure this. Examples describe the submission of so stabilized sulphur trioxide to repeated melting and freezing.
