Abstract
A sodium aluminium fluoride (bNaF. 4A1F3), similar to chiolite, and an alloy of silicon and aluminium are produced by heating, preferably between 660 and 1100 DEG C. an intimate mixture, preferably free from alkaline earth metals, or more than four atomic equivalents of aluminium and three molecular equivalents of dry sodium silicofluoride, preferably free from iron, in the substantially complete absence of water vapour and oxygen. The preparation of alloys of silicon and aluminium containing 12.5 per cent and 25 per cent silicon is described.ALSO:An alloy of silicon and aluminium and a sodium aluminium fluoride (6NaF 4AIF3), similar to chiolite, are produced by heating, preferably between 660 and 1100 DEG C, an intimate mixture, preferably free from alkaline earth metals, of more than four atomic equivalents of aluminium and three molecular equivalents of dry sodium silico-fluoride, preferably free from iron, in the substantially complete absence of water vapour and oxygen. The preparation of alloys of silicon and aluminium containing 12.5 per cent and 25 per cent silicos is described.
