Abstract
A fused salt bath for the heat treatment of steels and alloy steels comprises 87-97.5 per cent. by weight of anhydrous barium chloride, 0.5-3.0 silica and 2-10 of a boron compound such as anhydrous or hydrated borax, the temperature of the bath being 970-1350 DEG C. The bath may also contain an amount not exceeding 2 per cent. by weight of silicon carbide. In an example, the bath consists of 94 per cent. of anhydrous barium chloride, 5 of hydrated borax and 1 of silica. Instead of borax, other boron compounds such as other aklali borates, boric acid and boric anhydride may be used. Specification 415,846 is referred to.
