Abstract

Solutions supersaturated with respect to borax, are prepared by dissolving in cold water, e.g. at 5 to 20 DEG C. in the presence or absence of sodium chlorate and/or boric acid, a proportion (calculated as Na2B4O7) of a sodium diborate having from 0 to 5 molecules of water of hydration greater than the proportion of Na2B4O7 which would be present in a saturated solution of borax (dehydrate) at the temperature used.ALSO:A weed-killing composition, capable of giving by dissolving in cold water e.g. at 5 to 20 DEG C. a solution super-saturated in respect of borax, comprises sodium chlorate, sodium diborate having from 0 to 5 molecules of water of hydration and boric acid (as such or as sodium pentaborate or sodium metaborate), the molar ratio Na2O:B2O3 in the diborate and boric acid together being from 0,16 to 0,30. Preferably the weight ratio of sodium borate to sodium chlorate is 1,5 to 4,0 to 1.
