Abstract
A metallic article is provided with a diffusion alloy coating by being heated in the presence of halide and the coating-metal, the latter being in the form of one or more sintered elements. The halide may be a liquid such as hydrofluoric acid with which the sintered elements are impregnated, or a powdered solid, or a gas such as fluorine which is introduced into the midst or vicinity of the sintered elements. The sintered elements may consist of a number of balls which surround the article to be coated, or may be shaped to follow the contour of the article. Alternatively, for the coating of small articles such as iron or steel pinions or screws, a single sintered casing may be provided with cells each to receive a single article. When coating long articles such as tubes and sheets, a continuous method is employed in that the articles pass through the furnace one after the other, the sintered elements either accompanying the articles or forming, for example, a tunnel or core along which the articles pass.
