Abstract
832,807. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 5, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 9571/57. Class 39(4). [Also in Groups II, XII and XXII] A process for coating an article with metal comprises compacting metal powder around the article, sealing the article and powder in a sheath, and subjecting the assembly to the pressure of a gas in a furnace maintained at a temperature such that the sheath softens to transmit the pressure of the gas to the powder so that it sinters. The article may be a nuclear reactor fuel element 85 of dense uranium dioxide, the powder 86 berylium, and the sheath 87 formed from two mild steel trays 88, 89 welded together at 90, the end faces machined flat, and an evacuating tube fitted at 92. The furnace temperature may be 1050-1150‹C. and the pressure 1500-2500 p.s.i. After cooling, the trays 88, 89 are removed by dissolving in nitric acid. According to the Provisional Specification the element 85 may be of metallic uranium or thorium or their oxides or carbides.
