Abstract

A protective coating is formed on non-ferrous metals and alloys, particularly high percentage aluminium alloys, by immersion in a hot solution of phosphoric acid in ethylene glycol, glycerol, trimethylene glycol, or a mixture of two or all of these substances. Preferably the commercial substances containing up to 10 per cent of water are used or up to 10 per cent of water may be added if desired to pure glycol &c. The coated articles are washed, preferably in a dilute alkaline solution, and may then be stoved in air or oil for a few hours at a temperature of from 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. The coating may be used as a base for paint, varnish, or enamel.
