Abstract

Zinc or cadmium base metals, i.e. the metals zinc and cadmium, alloys composed principally of zinc or cadmium, and metals coated with these metals or alloys, are immersed in an acid solution containing chromate or dichromate ions and the anions of a mineral acid, the ratio of the chromate or dichromate ions to the mineral acid anions and the time of immersion being such that a visible coloured coating is formed on the metals. The mineral acid used is sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or nitric acid. The solution may consist of chromic acid and a free mineral acid or a salt of a mineral acid or both free acid and a salt, or it may consist of a dichromate and a free mineral acid. Details of the relative proportions and times of immersion are given. After immersion the article is cleaned by rinsing in cold water and dried, for example by an air blast. Before coating, the articles are cleaned by cathodic treatment for 1/2 -3 minutes in a hot solution of trisodium phosphate, followed by successive rinsings in hot and cold water. The treatment of the following alloys is referred to:-(1) an alloy containing 1 per cent copper and 0,01 per cent magnesium, the balance being zinc containing 0,05 per cent lead; (2) an alloy of zinc with 4,1 per cent aluminium, 2,7 per cent copper, and 0,03 per cent magnesium; (3) an alloy of zinc with 4,1 per cent aluminium and 0,04 per cent magnesium; (4) an alloy of zinc with 4,1 per cent aluminium, 1,0 per cent copper, and 0,03 per cent magnesium ; (5) an alloy of zinc with 4,1 per cent aluminium and 1,25 per cent copper. British Specifications 252,020, 305,651, [both in Class 82 (i)], 314,769, [Class 82 (ii)], 340,104, 374,826, 376,534, 376,988, 378,645, and U.S.A. Specification 1,663,215 are referred to.
