Abstract

Ferrous metals are given a fine grain etch in an acid bath in which is dissolved an oxidizing compound of a metal above ferrous iron in the electro-chemical series, and coated with a non-volatile metal which is reducing in relation to ferrous iron or a compound which liberates such metal under vitreous enamel firing conditions, and a vitreous enamel is fired on the resultant metal (see Group XXIII). In one example sheets of S.A.E. 1020 cold reduced steel ore (a) etched in 4 per cent H2SO4 containing a solution of Mn(NO3)2 for 3-10 minutes at 130-150 DEG F, the preferred percentage of Mn being 0.05-0.5 and of nitrate 0.1-1.0, (b) rinsed with water and immersed for 5-15 minutes at 180-190 DEG F in a mixture containing Ni SO4.6H2O 3 ozs., Ni Cl2. 6H2O 0.7 oz., H3BO3 0.3 oz. with one gallon of water and 3.8-38 gms. Zn SO4 or Cd SO4 with or without 3.8 gms. lauryl sulphate, the pH being adjusted to 1.8-2.0 with H2SO4, rinsed, scrubbed and dried and (c) sprayed with enamel dried and fired. In other examples H2SO4, MnSO4. 4H2O, and HNO3, or Li2CO3, HNO3, and water, or MnSO4. 4H2O, Na2CO3, HNO3, and H2SO4 are used at step (a) above. Preferred metals for step (b) above are As. Sb, Co, Ni, or alloys of these. and they may be applied by electro-plating or by vaporizing the metal. The Specification gives the composition of suitable enamels, and also of various stocks to which the invention may be applied.
