Abstract
De-nicotining is effected by subjecting tobacco leaves or parts thereof to fermentation in an alkaline liquor containing virulent bacteria which has been subjected to fermentation one or more times in the presence of air. The air is supplied under pressure by a compresser and freed from oil entrained thereby, and any excess of alkalinity produced is neutralized by injecting citric acid into the air. After de-nicotining a number of tobacco batches, the liquor which is maintained at a temperature between 25 and 40 DEG C., is sprayed on to those batches which were first de-nicotined. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described in Specification 470,719, and may include a cooler for condensing escaping gases and aromatic substances.
