Abstract

A process for producing tea free from theine consists in moistening the leaf with water, extracting with an organic solvent for theine and treating the leaf with hot air or hot inert gases after removal of the greater part of the solvent. The process may be interrupted one or more times in order to re-moisten the leaf with water. Solvents with a low boiling-point, such as methylene chloride, are used and the temperature of the leaf is not raised above about 65 DEG C.ALSO:A process for producing tea free from theine consists in moistening the leaf with water, extracting by an organic theine solvent such as methylene chloride, chloroform, benzene, &c., and treating the leaf with hot air or hot inert gas after removal of the greater part of the solvent. The hot air treatment may occur under reduced pressure and the process may be interrupted one or more times in order to remoisten the leaf with water. Solvents with low boiling points are preferred, and the temperature of the leaf is not raised above about 65 DEG .
